about

This is where the whole thing goes off the tracks. I wrote this the morning after I watched a documentary called The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia, a very disturbing look at poverty and a family, headed by Jesco, that embraces "alternative" lifestyles like meth, murder and tap dancing. I NEVER write about real people and always give myself lots of time to digest experiences in the hope that they might be spun into musical gold. That makes it all the more odd that I got this the morning after. Rent this movie for a view from the very lowest rung of the American ladder — maybe you'll get a song out of it.

lyrics

Jesco White

The family graveyard
The company store
The tracks for the coal train
The places of the poor
The boss man to rush you
The dark mine to crush you
He just started dancin’
He didn’t know what for

Down in Boone County
They’re mean and they’re lazy
The family’s twisted
Life made ‘em that way
You can’t build a wall
To keep out the crazies
They’re in here already
Can’t drive them away

AndJ esco White’s dancin’
For everyone to see
Somebody is shakin’
The family tree

Your daddy your brothers
your sisters your mother
They’re long gone and buried
They showed ‘em what for
Life is a crap shoot
In your day’d tap shoes
you just started dancin’
You can’t stop for sure

Now Jesco White’s dancin’
For everyone to see
Somebody is shakin’
The family tree

The cells of your brain
The fumes still remainin’
From ten years of of sniffin’
The gas you were drainin’
Your heart it is lawless
But your rhythm is flawless
you just started dancin’
It helped ease the strain

Jesco White’s dancin’
For everyone to see
Somebody is shakin’
The family tree

Yeah Jesco White’s dancin’
For everyone to see
Somebody is shakin’
The family tree
